Most families start looking at summer research programs in March. Most of the good ones closed in January. This page exists so that does not happen to you.
Below is every major summer research program worth applying to for summer 2027, with its usual application window, cost, eligibility and honest acceptance odds, followed by a month-by-month plan that works backward from the deadlines. Dates shift slightly year to year, so treat each window as the week to check the program's site, not the exact day.

The free residential programs, one by one
MIT PRIMES and PRIMES-USA
Year-long mentored research in math, computer science and computational biology. PRIMES is for Boston-area students who can attend in person; PRIMES-USA is remote for the rest of the United States. Applications usually open in November and close in early December, with an entrance problem set that is genuinely hard. If your student is a strong competition mathematician, this is the most research-like program available to a high schooler, and it produces real papers.
Research Science Institute
Six weeks at MIT, roughly 100 students, free. Applications typically open in November and close between mid December and early January for US students, earlier for international. RSI admits are usually olympiad medalists or students with a prior project. Apply if you are in that group; do not plan the summer around it if you are not. Best Research Programs for High School Students ranks it against the alternatives.
Simons Summer Research Program
Seven weeks in a Stony Brook lab with a stipend, for rising seniors. The catch is that students must be nominated by their school, and each school nominates a limited number. Applications usually close in early February, which means you need the nomination in January. Ask your counselor in December.
Summer Science Program
Five and a half weeks of residential team research in astrophysics, biochemistry, genomics or synthetic chemistry. Applications open in December and typically close in mid February, with an earlier deadline for international students. SSP is the most accessible of the famous programs for a very strong student without a national credential, and its need-based aid is real.
Clark Scholars
Seven weeks at Texas Tech, 12 students, free with a stipend, almost any field including humanities. Applications typically close in mid February. Students must be 17 by the program start. With a dozen seats it is one of the most selective programs in the country.
Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research
Eight weeks in a Stanford medical lab with a stipend. Applications usually close in late February. The practical constraint is that students must get themselves to Stanford every day, so it is effectively a Bay Area program. Research Programs in the Bay Area covers the local alternatives.
Garcia Center Summer Scholars
Seven weeks of polymer and materials research at Stony Brook, with a strong pipeline into Regeneron STS and ISEF. Applications close in early to mid March, later than most. There is a program fee, and non-local students pay for housing.
NIH, Jackson Laboratory and university lab programs
The NIH summer internship programs and HiSTEP, Jackson Laboratory's Summer Student Program, Boston University's RISE, and similar university programs offer real lab placements for rising seniors, usually with February or March deadlines. Competitive but less so than the programs above, and worth a look if you are near one.
What to do if you are not getting into those
That is most students, including most strong ones. The honest math is that the eight free residential programs above admit a few hundred students combined, out of tens of thousands of applicants. Treat them as lottery tickets you buy in January and move on.
The alternative that produces the same kind of result, a research paper with a mentor, is online one-on-one mentorship, and the key difference is that it runs year-round. A student rejected from RSI in March can start a mentored project in April and have a paper submitted before school starts. The YRI Fellowship is ten weeks with a PhD mentor, any field, grades 6 to 12, with a first-author paper as the designed outcome and 87 percent of Fellows publishing. Decisions take 48 hours, so it works as the backup plan you line up in parallel. Lumiere vs Polygence vs YRI compares the main options.
A month-by-month plan for summer 2027
October to November 2026. Decide which free programs the student is realistically competitive for. Line up recommenders now; teachers are swamped in January. If there is no prior project, start one now with a mentor so there is something to describe in the applications. This is the single highest-leverage move on the list.
December 2026. PRIMES and RSI applications due. Ask the counselor about a Simons nomination. Request transcripts.
January 2027. Finish RSI if the deadline runs into January. Draft SSP, Clark and SIMR essays, which overlap heavily. Submit Jackson Lab.
February 2027. Simons, SSP, Clark, SIMR, BU RISE deadlines. Submit everything by the first week to avoid the last-day portal failures.
March 2027. Garcia and remaining lab programs. Decisions start arriving. If the answers are no, start a mentored project this month so the summer is not lost.
April to May 2027. Remaining decisions. Confirm housing and travel for any admit. For everyone else, the mentored project is now in week four or five.
June to August 2027. Either the residential program, or the mentored project finishing into a paper and a competition entry for the fall fair season. Science Fair Deadlines 2026-27 has the fall calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are summer research program deadlines for 2027? Most of the selective free programs close between early December and late February: PRIMES and RSI in December or early January, Simons, SSP, Clark and SIMR in February, Garcia in March. Online mentorship programs like YRI run year-round with rolling admission.
What is the best summer research program for high school students? For students who can get in, RSI, SSP, Simons, PRIMES and Clark Scholars are the best because they are free, famous and selective. For the much larger group who will not be admitted, an online one-on-one mentorship that ends in a published paper produces a comparable result on a flexible timeline.
Are summer research programs free? The most prestigious ones are free, often with a stipend, and they are also the hardest to get into. Paid programs range from about $2,800 to $9,000 for mentorship and $5,000 to $13,000 for pre-college campus courses, which are not research.
Can a 9th or 10th grader do a summer research program? Most free residential programs require rising juniors or seniors. Online mentorship programs including YRI accept 9th and 10th graders and younger, and a project finished early is what makes a student competitive for the residential programs later.
What if I get rejected from every summer program? Start a mentored research project the week the last rejection arrives. A paper finished by August and entered in the fall fair season is worth more on an application than any program name, and it is available to every student who is willing to do the work.
