The YRI Fellowship maintains a 6% acceptance rate — meaning we accept roughly 6 out of every 100 applicants. Here's what that means for you and how to maximize your chances.

It comes down to a simple constraint: every student gets a dedicated PhD mentor. We can't scale mentors the way a lecture-based program can scale seats. Each cohort is physically limited by the number of mentors available.

We also want students who will make the most of the opportunity. An 87% publication rate doesn't happen by accepting everyone — it happens by selecting students who are genuinely motivated and ready to commit to real research.

We don't require:

  • A perfect GPA
  • Prior research experience
  • Programming skills
  • A specific major or field interest

What we DO look for:

We want to see that you're interested in a topic for reasons beyond "it looks good on my application." The best applications show a specific problem or question the student wants to explore.

Research takes work. We look for evidence that you follow through — whether that's in academics, sports, volunteering, or any sustained effort.

Why do you want to publish research? The answer doesn't have to be profound, but it should be honest. "I want to contribute to knowledge in a field I care about" is better than "I heard it helps with college apps."

Many of our best students — including ISEF finalists and Ivy League admits — started with zero research experience. We don't expect you to know how to do research. We expect you to be willing to learn.

  1. Be specific about your interests — "I'm interested in how machine learning can detect early signs of Alzheimer's through eye tracking" is much stronger than "I like AI"
  2. Be honest about your experience level — We've published 9th graders with no prior experience. Pretending to know more than you do won't help
  3. Show your motivation — Tell us WHY this matters to you personally
  4. Apply early — Each cohort has limited spots. Earlier applications get priority when mentor capacity is tight
  1. Application review (24-48 hours) — Our team reviews your interests, motivation, and fit
  2. Acceptance decision — If accepted, you receive an enrollment offer with a deadline
  3. Enrollment — Secure your spot with payment (installment plans available)
  4. Onboarding — Complete a detailed questionnaire about your research interests
  5. Mentor matching — We pair you with a PhD mentor matched to your specific interests
  6. First session — Meet your mentor and start your research journey

No. We look at motivation and research interest, not GPA. Some of our best students didn't have perfect grades.

Yes. Suriya D. published in IEEE EMBC as a 9th grader. Avyay G. won 1st place at science fair in 9th grade. Age is not a barrier.

That's fine. Indicate your broad interests and our mentors will help you narrow it down during the first session.

Absolutely. We serve students from 50+ countries. The program is fully remote.

You can reapply for a future cohort. We recommend strengthening your application by being more specific about your research interests.

Ready to be part of the 6%? We're currently accepting applications for our next cohort.
