What is the Summer Science Program and how hard is it to get into? SSP is a five-week residential research program for high school juniors, run since 1959 by the nonprofit SSP International, in which teams of three do an original project in astrophysics, biochemistry, bacterial genomics or cell biology at one of 13 college campuses. The 2026 fee was $11,800, more than half of participants received aid, families earning $75,000 or less attend free, and the latest published admission rate is 16%, from 3,739 applications in 2025. Applications for SSP 2027 open in December 2026 and close in January for international students and February for US students.
Facts come from ssp.org, SSP's 2025 annual report and named third-party guides as of November 2026, all linked in the Sources section.
What SSP is
SSP describes itself as one of the oldest residential STEM programs in the United States. Caltech, MIT and Harvey Mudd are listed as academic affiliates, and more than 4,300 students have attended since 1959. Each program is 36 students living on a college campus for five weeks, working in teams of three, with about 60 hours of research in a typical week. Residential mentors are college seniors or STEM graduate students; the faculty are academics and working scientists.
Unlike RSI, where each student has an individual project with a mentor, SSP gives every team the same research problem. The asteroid, enzyme or bacterial strain is yours and the result is new, but the experimental design comes from SSP's curriculum. For most families that is a feature: the program is tested, teams finish, and the output is a written report and a poster rather than a journal paper.
The four tracks
Applicants choose one track. Campus assignment comes after admission and cannot be changed.
| Track | 2026 project | Prerequisites (completed or in progress by June, for credit) | 2026 campuses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astrophysics | Image a near-Earth asteroid over several nights, write Python to compute its orbit, submit to the Minor Planet Center | Any physics plus precalculus; calculus accepted instead of physics if your school offers none | Albion, Georgia College, Linfield, UW-River Falls, Colby, Lehigh, Knox |
| Biochemistry | Characterize a fungal enzyme with assays and modeling, then design a candidate inhibitor | Biology and chemistry; strong algebra recommended | Hendrix, Chadron State, College of Wooster, Indiana, Purdue, Guelph |
| Bacterial Genomics | Evolve a bacterium under stress in a chemostat, sequence the strains, map the mutations | Biology and Algebra II | Albion, Chadron State, College of Wooster, Lehigh, Purdue, Guelph |
| Cell Biology | CRISPR editing in yeast: design a guide RNA, generate mutants in cell cycle genes, characterize them | Biology and Algebra II; strong algebra recommended | UW-River Falls only |
SSP does not require AP or advanced courses for any track, and self-study does not qualify. The 2025 annual report also lists a Synthetic Chemistry track that is not on the 2026 track pages; check ssp.org when the 2027 application opens. Pick the track whose prerequisites you have fully met and whose subject you would read about on your own.
Who is eligible
- Grade: current high school juniors only, which for SSP 2027 means students graduating in 2028. Freshmen, sophomores and seniors are not eligible, even if they meet the age and course requirements.
- Age: at least 15 and not yet 19 during the entire program.
- Coursework: the track prerequisites, taken for credit and a grade, completed by June. A course in progress in spring counts.
- International applicants: anyone who attends school outside the US, or who is not a US citizen or permanent resident. They submit English proficiency scores and apply by the earlier January deadline.
- Full participation: Lumiere reports that SSP requires full attendance, with no overlapping program, course or internship.
What SSP costs and how financial aid works
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application | Free |
| 2026 program fee | $11,800, covering tuition, room, board, supplies, local field trips and transportation |
| 2027 program fee | Not yet published; SSP says full costs post in December 2026 |
| SSP's cost per participant | About $14,600, with the gap covered by donors |
| Family income of $75,000 or less | Attend free |
| Family income up to about $140,000 (family of four, typical assets) | Likely full aid or a partial discount |
| Stipends | A limited number of $3,000 stipends for students who would otherwise work in summer |
| Travel | Aid can include round-trip airfare for the student only |
| Loans | Never part of an aid package |
In 2026 SSP granted more than $4.1 million in fee discounts, travel aid and stipends, and 52% of participants received some aid. In 2025, 353 of 588 participants received aid and 213 attended on full aid.
Admissions are need-blind. The aid form appears on the applicant portal only after decisions are released, so a request for aid cannot affect admission. For how SSP's price compares with other options, see how much research programs cost.

The SSP acceptance rate
SSP publishes its numbers in its annual report, which is unusual among selective programs. For 2025: 3,739 completed applications, 588 participants, a 16% admission rate and an 80% enrollment rate, across 17 programs on 14 campuses. That was the first year eligibility was narrowed to juniors only, and applications still set a record.
For 2026, SSP says it admitted around 700 participants but has not published an applicant count or a rate. Lumiere estimates about 19% using the 2025 pool, reports 720 students across 20 programs on 13 campuses, and reports that 2026 admission used a holistic review followed by a lottery among qualified applicants who consented to an impact study. SSP's own pages do not describe a lottery; ask SSP directly if the mechanism matters to you.
Third-party sites quoting a 4% or 5% rate are using old figures. SSP has roughly tripled its capacity since 2024, and its own report puts the rate in the mid-teens, far less selective than RSI, which CEE says accepts under 2.5%. What the application asks for
| Component | What SSP requires |
|---|---|
| Track choice | One track only |
| Written responses | Questions about who you are, your interests, what you would contribute and what you hope to gain. SSP calls these "the most important parts of your application." |
| Recommendations | One required, from a math or science educator at your school, preferably a current teacher. A second is optional but "highly preferred," from another math or science teacher or an adult outside your family. |
| Transcript and coursework | Proof that the track prerequisites are complete or in progress, for credit and a grade |
| Test scores | Not collected or considered for 2027. International applicants submit English proficiency scores only. |
| Context | SSP says it evaluates holistically and considers motivation, resources available to you, and obstacles overcome |
| Fee | None |
How to be competitive
SSP has written down what it looks for, so the advice is short.
The odds, frankly
A 16% admission rate means five of six applicants are turned away, from a pool that is already self-selected: students with the prerequisites who want to spend five summer weeks in a lab. Many rejected applicants are indistinguishable from admitted ones on paper, and if SSP used a lottery stage in 2026, that is doubly true.
Apply, because the application is free and the program is excellent, then plan the summer as if the answer is no. Apply to RSI if your scores fit, and see the broader list in research opportunities for high school students, most of which share January and February deadlines.
If you do not get in
Decisions arrive in March or April of junior year. Treat that as a schedule, not a verdict. One summer and one fall remain before college applications, and what SSP would have given you, a finished research project you can describe in detail, is still available.
Be clear about what SSP produces: a written report and a poster on a project SSP designed. That is a strong experience and a strong line on an application. It is not a first-author paper, and not an entry for ISEF or JSHS, which require a project the student designed. Most students admitted to selective colleges with a research profile built it on their own timeline, with a mentor, over months.
The YRI Fellowship is built for that: ten weeks of one-on-one work with a PhD mentor on a question the student chooses, the student as first author, a paper submitted to IEEE, Springer or Elsevier venues, ISEF and JSHS preparation included, and a letter of recommendation from the mentor. Mentorship continues at no extra cost until the paper is published. 87% of Fellows publish and 73% place at competitions; Fellows have been admitted to Brown, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Caltech and Harvard. It costs $2,997, with a three-month payment plan and case-by-case scholarships. Admissions are rolling, so a student who hears from SSP in April can start in May and have a submitted paper before senior-year applications open. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SSP acceptance rate?
SSP's 2025 annual report lists 3,739 completed applications, 588 participants and a 16% admission rate. SSP admitted around 700 students for 2026 but has not published a rate. Figures of 4% or 5% on third-party sites predate the program's expansion.
How much does SSP cost?
The 2026 program fee was $11,800, covering tuition, housing, meals, supplies and local trips; applying is free. Families earning $75,000 or less attend free, families up to about $140,000 usually receive full aid or a discount, and SSP meets 100% of demonstrated need with no loans. The 2027 fee posts in December 2026.
When is the SSP 2027 application deadline?
SSP anticipates a January 2027 deadline for international applicants and February 2027 for US applicants, with the application opening in December 2026. Exact dates are posted when it opens. The 2026 deadlines were January 29 and February 19.
Can sophomores apply to SSP?
No. SSP accepts current juniors only, aged 15 to 18 during the program, with the track prerequisites complete by June. Sophomores who meet the age and course requirements are still not eligible.
Does SSP require SAT or ACT scores?
No. SSP is not collecting or considering standardized test scores for 2027. International applicants submit English proficiency scores.
Where is SSP held?
In 2026 SSP ran at 13 campuses, from Colby in Maine to Linfield in Oregon, plus the University of Guelph in Canada. Students apply to a track, not a campus; SSP assigns the campus after admission.
Is SSP worth it compared with RSI?
They are different programs. RSI is six weeks, free, individual mentored projects, under 2.5% admitted. SSP is five weeks, fee-based with strong aid, team projects on a set curriculum, about 16% admitted. See YRI vs RSI vs SSP.
What should I do if I am not admitted to SSP?
Do the research on your own timeline. The YRI Fellowship pairs a student with a PhD mentor for ten weeks, one on one, on a question the student chooses, and ends with a first-author paper submitted to a peer-reviewed venue plus ISEF and JSHS preparation. 87% of Fellows publish. Admissions are rolling and the application takes ten minutes with no fee.
