Chennai school students can learn from IIT Madras through its School Connect online courses, attend IMSc's Open Day and mathematics outreach, compete in the IRIS National Fair and the Southern India Science Fair, and apply to RSI-India at IISc. For a published research paper of their own, most Chennai students work one-on-one with a mentor toward an IEEE, Springer or Elsevier venue, because open research internships for school students are rare.

Chennai has a deep tradition in mathematics, physics and engineering, with IIT Madras, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) and the Chennai Mathematical Institute all in the city. This guide explains what those institutions offer school students, which competitions lead somewhere, and how a Chennai student goes from strong marks to a research result. IIT Madras School Connect

School Connect is the flagship outreach initiative of IIT Madras's Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). It offers introductory 8-week online certificate courses to students in Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 at partner schools. Students who complete the assignments and exams receive an official e-certificate from IIT Madras CODE.

Courses run in four batches a year. According to the official page, the January 2027 batch is upcoming and registration closes January 8, 2027, with an April 2027 batch after that. Because access is through partner schools, the first step is to ask whether your school is registered.

School Connect is a good way to learn a subject at university level and see whether it holds your interest. It is coursework, so it does not produce original research or a paper.

IMSc: Open Day and mathematics outreach

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Taramani runs a steady calendar of outreach. In 2026:

  • IMSc Open Day was held on September 18, with demonstrations and experiments for school students.
  • kaNita kAnakam, IMSc's mathematics outreach event, was held on October 6 in the Ramanujan Auditorium.
  • A Vigyan Pratibha summer camp for Kendriya Vidyalaya students ran at IMSc from May 11 to 15, alongside Vigyan Pratibha teacher workshops. Vigyan Pratibha, maintained by HBCSE-TIFR, works with 350 schools to help students engage with science and mathematics in depth.
  • The Youth Astronomy and Space Science Congress, an annual initiative of the Tamil Nadu Astronomy and Science Society, was hosted at IMSc in July.

Watch the IMSc outreach page for next year's dates. These events are a strong introduction to how mathematicians and physicists think. A student who wants to do research afterwards needs an open question and a mentor.

The Chennai Mathematical Institute and IIT Madras's research labs focus on university and graduate work. A school student who wants time with a researcher there usually needs to write directly to an individual faculty member with a specific question.

Science fairs: Southern India Science Fair, NCSC and IRIS

Southern India Science Fair. The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum in Bengaluru, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, organises this zonal fair with the education departments of the southern states, including Tamil Nadu's Department of School Education. The 2026 edition was held in Hyderabad from January 19 to 23, 2026, and a Tamil Nadu teacher won the first prize in the teacher category.

National Children's Science Congress. NCSC is a Department of Science and Technology program for children aged 10 to 17 (Junior Group 10 to 14, Senior Group above 14 and up to 17). Two students and a guide teacher work on a local problem, moving through district, state and national rounds. The 2026 theme was "Science and Innovation for Sustainability," which suits Chennai topics such as flooding, coastal erosion and water reuse.

IRIS National Fair. IRIS is India's ISEF-affiliated national fair, run by the ExSTEMplar Education Linkers Foundation and recognised by Society for Science. It is open to students of Indian origin living in India in Classes 5 to 12, individually or in teams of two. Its more than 20 categories include mathematics, physics and astronomy, and computational biology. For 2026-27, submissions ran from August 1 to October 13, 2026, and are closed. The National Fair is typically held in Bengaluru in January or February, and top finalists form Team India at ISEF. Every project needs a project guide who verifies the work. How to Win the IRIS National Fair explains the screening.

Olympiads versus research

Chennai produces many strong olympiad students. India's olympiad programme runs through HBCSE in Mumbai: the first stage in mathematics is conducted by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India), and later stages by HBCSE. Olympiads build exceptional problem solving, and a medal is a strong signal. But an olympiad tests answers to known problems under time pressure. Research asks a question nobody has answered yet. The two complement each other, and an olympiad student often makes a fast researcher.

Manomay Jain, a 12th grader at Modern School, Barakhamba Road in Delhi and an international math olympiad medalist, made exactly that move. He studied how to repair graph neural network outputs for the minimum vertex cover problem, restoring feasibility from 38.67% to 100%, and his first-author paper was accepted at an IEEE conference (read his story).

National programs: RSI-India and INSPIRE

RSI-India. The free six-week RSI-India program at IISc in Bengaluru, run by the Center for Excellence in Education, selects 32 students for June 6 to July 17, 2027. Applications close December 14, 2026. It is open to Indian citizens who have completed Class 10 and are currently in Class 11, applying on their own. Each student completes an individual project with an IISc mentor and presents a paper and a talk.

INSPIRE and the end of KVPY. The KVPY test was discontinued from 2022 and folded into DST's INSPIRE programme. At school level, INSPIRE offers INSPIRE-MANAK for Classes 6 to 12 (schools nominate ideas) and INSPIRE Internship camps for Class 11 science students.

Research internships for Class 11 students in Chennai

Formal lab internships for students under 18 are rare in Chennai, as elsewhere in India, because labs must manage supervision and safety. A Class 11 student has three practical routes: RSI-India, a personal arrangement with a faculty member, or one-on-one mentorship with publication as the goal.

How to publish a research paper as a school student in India

  1. Narrow a broad interest into one testable question.
  2. Work with a mentor who has published in that field.
  3. Use sound data and methods. Mathematical and computational projects need no wet lab.
  4. Write in the venue's format, with methods, results and honest limitations.
  5. Submit to a legitimate peer-reviewed venue and respond to reviewers.

Nishanth Alampally, an 11th grader at Delhi Public School Bangalore North who taught himself university mathematics because his school did not offer it, named and quantified the "Jitter Paradox" in physics-informed neural networks. His first-author paper was accepted at an IEEE conference with minor revisions (read his story). That is the kind of project a mathematically strong Chennai student can do. How to Publish in IEEE as a High School Student covers venues and timelines.

Why research matters for US college applications

A first-author paper with a DOI is a credential a US admissions reader can verify, which a board percentage is not. It gives the student a specific story for essays and interviews and a mentor who can write a detailed letter. YRI Fellows have been admitted to Brown, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Caltech and Harvard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How the YRI Fellowship helps Chennai students

The YRI Fellowship gives a Chennai student a research project of their own and a clear path to publication. Each student works one-on-one with a PhD mentor in weekly online sessions for 10 weeks, spending 5 to 8 hours a week, which fits around school and coaching. An editing team reviews every draft, and a publishing team takes the paper to IEEE, Springer or Elsevier journals and conferences, with free help until it is published. Fellows get ISEF and JSHS preparation, which carries straight into IRIS, and a letter of recommendation from their mentor.

87% of Fellows publish and 73% place at science competitions. More than 1,000 students from 50+ countries have taken part, with a network of 1,000+ PhD mentors. No research experience is needed, and decisions come within 48 hours.

Tuition is $2,997, or 3 payments of $999, with scholarships considered case by case. See pricing, browse published work by YRI Fellows, and apply to the YRI Fellowship.
